Abstract

1405857 Freight container spreaders MIDLAND-ROSS CORP 15 Jan 1973 [17 Jan 1972] 1946/73 Heading B8H In the simultaneous lifting of two freight containers the respective spreaders 5, 6 are spaced apart at their adjacent ends or sides by an abutment carriage 9 mounted on the spreader 6 and a bumper member 8 mounted on the spreader 5. The carriage 9 comprises a pair of upright stanchions 47, 48 flared outwardly and upwardly to provide a lead-in for the bumper member and internally connected to a horizontal frame 36. The frame 36 has rollers 41, 42 running on spaced guide rails (38), (39), Fig. 3 (not shown) fixed to the spreader and moved therealong towards and away from the adjacent spreader by an hydraulic actuator 57. The bumper member 8 comprises a vertical stanchion 14 pivotably mounting at its upper end one end of a bumper frame 17 having rollers (51), (52) at its other ends to engage the stanchions 47, 48. An oblique arm 31 is secured to the frame 17 and is further connected to an hydraulic actuator 33 to move the frame between a horizontal carriage engaging position and a vertical inoperative position. In an altertive embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown) the frame (17<SP>1</SP>) is fixed to a rotatable shaft (65) with a relatively rotatable collar (72) mounted thereon and connected to an actuator (33). An axially non-rotatable collar (75) is also mounted on the shaft and is adjustable biased by a spring (76) to engage the collar (72) to effect rotation of the shaft (65) up to a predetermined loading whereupon the collars will move apart.
