A railway vehicle has a main frame 10, Figs. 6 and 7, supported by wheels 12 for movement along rails 11, for carrying maintenance equipment 13 and incorporates a derailing and rerailing apparatus which comprises (a) an auxiliary frame 17 of inverted U-shape section extending transversely of the vehicle at each end and having support arms 16 pivoted to the frame 10 at 14; (b) a fluidpressure operable piston rod 24 and cylinder 26 pivotally connected at 23 to the frame 17 and at 27 to the frame 10 to impart relative vertical movement between the frames 17, 10 to raise and lower the frames and thus the wheels 12 selectively relative to the rails 11; (c) an auxiliary trackway 32 extending within each frame 17 and disposed to engage the rails 11 when the frame 17 is lowered; (d) an extensible trackway 42 pivotally connected by an intermediate trackway section 36 to the trackway 32 and defining an extension therefor which extends selectively from a retracted position over the rails 11, Figs 1 and 2 (not shown) to the position shown in Fig. 6; the trackway 32 being movable from a position over the rails 11, Fig. 3 (not shown), to a position outwardly of the rails 11 and above the frame 17, Fig. 4 (not shown); and (e) a fluid-pressure operable sprocket 56, rotatable within the frame 17, engaging a chain 34 secured to the trackways 32, 36 and 42, to propel the frames 17 and 10, when the wheels 12 are raised from the rails 11, selectively from a position over the rails 11 to a position alongside the rails 11. The sprocket 56 is driven by a shaft 52, worm wheel 58 and worm 59 from a shaft 61 and fluid-pressure motor 62 connected to the frame 17 by a torque arm 66 and adjustable link 68. During derailing and rerailing, the trackways 32, 36 and 42 are secured to one of the track rails 11 by a hook 72 in turn connected to a bracket 71 on the trackway 42. The latter when extended is supported by a wheel 51.
