Abstract

1405674 Cockle harvester IRISH COCKLES EXPORT CO Ltd 1 Sept 1972 [3 Sept 1971] 40771/72 Heading A1A [Also in Division E1] In a cockle harvester a digging blade 2 removes the top 2¢ inches of sand from the foreshore, and this sand is sieved by a vibrating conveyer 3, comprising a series of transverse bars mounted on wire ropes, and which passes under a series of scrapers formed from transverse lengths of angle 18 and rubber material 27. Any cockles having dimensions greater than 1¢" are passed onto a conveyer 4, the remaining material falling back onto the foreshore. From the conveyer 4 the cockles are transferred to a discharge conveyor 5 and thence via a chute 16 into a following trailer which may be drawn by the harvester. The conveyer 5 has buckets 13 formed by pairs of end plates connected by transverse bars. The depth of the blade 2 is controlled by a pair of adjustable coulter wheels 20 and the harvester is also supported by a jockey wheel 23. Cockle seeds or young cockles may also be distributed on the foreshore by the harvester.
