Abstract

1405247 Mounting rotors in dynamoelectric machines UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 1 Aug 1972 [11 Aug 1971] 37796/71 Heading H2A [Also in Division F2] In a high speed induction motor having a rotor 9 (other parts not shown), a high speed shaft assembly comprises a shaft and two sleeve members 3, the ends of the shaft being mounted within the sleeve members 3 by means of resilient couplings. The shaft includes end stubs 2, welded to a hollow centre portion 1, and the resilient couplings take the form of soft rubber '0' rings 4 fitted in grooves 5. Each sleeve member 3 has a precision ground outer surface and serves as a journal member in a gas bearing 6, of which the outer bearing sleeve 7 has a lining 8 of plastics material. It is stated that the natural, critical whirl frequency of this arrangement is higher than that which would be appropriate to a similar shaft of a length extending to the ends of both bearing sleeves 7, and that operation at a high speed below the natural critical whirl frequency can therefore more readily be arranged with this shaft assembly.
