Abstract

1405179 Controlling oxygen steelmaking USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 18 July 1972 [27 July 1971] 33650/72 Heading C7D To obtain a desired final carbon content and temperature the hot metal and scrap components of the charge, and the amount of oxygen required, are determined in accordance with a mathematical model which has been developed by identifying the factors which influence the process and mathematically relating them to the bath carbon content. From the model there is obtained the relevant value of the constant (K) in an expression relating both carbon to oxygen blown in, e.g. of the form: whereby as the volume of oxygen blown in is continuously monitored the resultant carbon content is calculated and blowing stopped when the desired level is reached. Preferably the initially calculated value of the constant is revised when the precise composition of the hot metal, and the weights of all inputs, are known. Among the factors that may be taken into account in developing the model are oxygen, manganese and phosphorus contents of the bath, iron content of the slag, amount of fluorspar addition, steel recovery, and ratio of CO:CO 2 evolved during : refining. The model may indicate the need for addition of exothermic material such as calcium carbide, ferro-silicon, ferromanganese or silico manganese.
