Abstract

1404488 Conducting liquid switches; cell with circuit completed by water DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 1 Dec 1972 [2 Dec 1971] 55733/72 Headings H1B and H1N In an electric switch in which water, such as sea-water, acts as the conductor, a rupturable diaphragm 14, Fig. 2, normally prevents ingress of water to engage a contact 6 in a chamber 16 to complete a circuit. The switch is used in conjunction with a voltaic cell 17 mounted in an insulating housing 5. One end of the cell 17 is permanently in engagement with a spring loaded terminal end 9 and the other with the fixed contact 6. The diaphragm 14 is pierced by a spring loaded pin 4 when released by manually withdrawing a locking pin 13. A conductive cap 1 forms the other terminal contact of the switch, and has passages 15, through which the water flows to the diaphragm 14. The switch is used in conjunction with an eletronic time delay circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown), for sequentially operating marine distress signals (26, 27) which may have pyrotechnic charges.
