Abstract

1404315 Bleached wood pulp ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 8 Sept 1972 [15 Sept 1971] 43044/71 Heading D1P Bleached pulp is produced by subjecting lignocellulosic material (wood chips and saw dust are specified) to a plurality of pulping and/or refining operations at elevated temperature, a carbonyl sulphoxylate (R 1 R 2 COHSO 2 M) or an ammonia condensate thereof or thiourea dioxide being added to the lignocellulosic material before or during the refining or pulping. Preferably R 1 and R 2 comprise hydrogen or C 1 to C 4 alkyl and M is sodium potassium or zinc, the sodium sulphoxylates or formaldehyde acetaldehyde and acetone are specified. They may be prepared by the reaction of a dithionate with a carbonyl compound or a carbonyl bisulphate. The reaction may occur in situ. Other reducing agents (sodium or potassium sulphite or metabisulphite or sodium or zinc dithionite) may be present as may E.D.T.A. or polyphosphate sequestrants. One or more thermomechanical pulping or disk refining operations may be employed at a temperature of 50‹C to 200‹C., a pH of 3.5 to 6 and a bleaching agent concentration of 0.1% to 5%.
