Abstract

1403634 Teeth rolling tool EX-CELL-O CORP 6 Nov 1973 [28 Aug 1973] 51537/73 Heading B3M A tool, 12, Figure 1, for rolling teeth on a cylindrical workpiece has a toothed working surface divided into sections 12A-12D, the section 12B having teeth whose working surfaces are plated. The plating may be of gold, silver, copper, nickel, or cadmium and have a thickness of 0À0001 to 0À0003 inch. The tool itself may be of M50 tool steel hardened by nitriding. The teeth in section 12C, Fig. 3, initially contact a workpiece and have sloping upper surfaces. The teeth progressively increase in height from the level of a pitch line 34. The teeth in section 12B similarly increase in height such that the workpiece (which is formed between two such reciprocating tools) has almost completed teeth formed on it. The section 12A finishes the workpiece teeth, whereas the final section 12D tapers away from the workpiece. Gear teeth, spline teeth, or worm teeth, which may be of spur or helical form, can be formed on a workpiece.
