Abstract

1,039,564. Screw-cutting or swaging taps. BALAX INTERNATIONAL Ltd. April 24, 1963, No. 16095/63. Headings B3D and B3N. A method of making screw cutting or swaging taps comprises feeding a tool 80, Fig. 5 (not shown), on a radius 42 which is offset from the midposition between the crests 25 of successive teeth in the lead section and, as the tool progresses from the lead section to the section of constant diameter, shifting it to the mid-point between crests so that all of the crests have the same axial pitch. The forming tool may be a grinding disc, and the lead teeth are of the form described in Specification 1,045,794. A thread-swaging tap may be produced, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), in which the lead-teeth 50 have narrower crests than the following teeth 62. At least one axial lubricant-channel 52 is provided, and two, three or four side lobes 54 to facilitate swaging.
