Abstract

1403075 Processing radioactive material G D SEARLE & CO 1 Dec 1972 55481/72 Heading G6R [Also in Division H5] Apparatus for the preparation of samples of chemical or radioactive analysis, in particular the preparation of samples of biological origin for liquid scintillation counting comprises a reaction chamber 2 supplied with oxygen through a separate pipe (Fig. 1, not shown), or a hollow electrode 6 as shown, a semple holder 12 mounted on a metal base plate 14, and a source 8 connected between plate 14 and electrode 6, to produce a spark discharge of sufficient energy to convert the oxygen at least partly to singlet and triplet oxygen which reacts with the sample the discharge being maintained until combustion is complete. Exhaust gases are vented through an upper outlet 16 and are collected in absorption solvents or in a condensation chamber. If the sample 10 is wet it may be dried by preheating the oxygen to more than 100‹ C., by directing heated air on to the chamber walls or by an electric heater beneath the plate 14. The source 8 is preferably a 40,000-80,000 alternating voltage source. Preheated nitrogen may be injected prior to introducing oxygen to drive off volatile sample ingredients which would explode in the presence of oxygen. The apparatus is particularly suitable for producing oxidation products of C<SP>14</SP>, S<SP>35</SP> or H<SP>3</SP>. For counting tritium as tritiated water a mixture of methyl alcohol and toluene with a PPO, i.e. 2,5-diphenyloxazole, phosphor and a POPOP, i.e. p-bis-[2-(5-phenyloxyazolyl)] benzene, spectrum shifter is used as solvent. For C<SP>14</SP> an amine such as ethylamine or phenylamine is used as the scintillation, solvent, any well known phosphors being included in the solvent. Sodium hydroxide or similar basic chemical solutions can be used to trap carbon dioxide.
