Abstract
1402592 Making electric motors BLACK & DECKER MFG CO 2 May 1972 [5 May 1971] 51179/74 Divided out of 1402591 Heading B3A [Also in Division H2] A method of making a field sub-assembly for an electric motor comprises winding a coil of wire 16 from a wire supply into a pair of slots 14 in a field core 10 and securing the finish lead of the wound coil under tension to a terminal 23 or 34 provided on the field core before separating the finish lead from the wire supply. A pair of terminal blocks 20 are located in slots in the core 10, Fig. 1 (not shown), each block conforming in shape to the corresponding slot and being provided with shoulders 21 which engage the tips of polepieces (13). The terminal blocks are placed in the core slots after the coils 16 have been wound and the start and finish leads of the coils are placed in channel portions 26 of the terminals 23. The channel portions are crimped over the wire and they are formed with sharp edges for piercing the insulation of the wire. Alternatively the insulation may be stripped from the wire ends. The wire is preferably severed in the same operation as the channels 26 are crimped. The end of the wire is inserted in a sleeve 28 and is retained in it by a tang 28 pressed out of the sleeve wall. The terminal 34 comprises a channel portion 35, a sleeve portion 36 defined by a folded-over strip and a tang 37. In an alternative method, the terminal blocks are placed in the field core, the start ends of two coils are crimped to their respective terminals and a pair of coils are wound simultaneously on the core. When winding is completed, the finish leads still connected to their winding needles and hence under tension are crimped to their respective terminals and then severed from the wire supply.
