Abstract

1402169 Condensation resins DEUTSCHE TEXACO AG 4 Dec 1972 [9 Dec 1971] 50579/72 Heading C3R In a continuous process for the production of condensation resins the reaction is carried out in a single reactor or at least two seriesconnected reactors each comprising a heatexchanger and a circulating pump and in each of which the said pump mixes the feed and recycled material and forces them under turbulent flow through the heat exchanger, the feed comprising the reactants in the first reactor and the partially reacted product in any subsequent reactor. The process can be used to prepare urea -HCHO, melamine -HCHO, phenol -HCHO and ketone -HCHO resins. In the examples phenol -HCHO resols and novolaks are prepared using a 3 stage unit as shown. Phenol and the catalyst are passed through cooler 3 by means of metering pumps 1 and 2 which are then passed together with -HCHO from metering pump 4 to recycle pump 5, which mixes the reactants with the recycle material drawn via line 7 and forces them under turbulent flow through heat exchanger A which may be of the plate-type or spiral type. In a similar manner the largely methylolated product from exchanger A is completely methylolated and the cross-linking reacting started in heat exchanger B and continued in heat exchanger C.
