Abstract

1402098 Coated polyalkylenes DUNLOP HOLDINGS LTD 26 Oct 1972 [12 Nov 1971] 52577/71 Addition to 1299725 Heading B2E A method of bonding an elastomer to a polyalkylene substrate such as crystalline polypropylene, polyethylene or ethylene/propylene copolymer, comprises applying to the surface of the polyalkylene a solution or dispersion of an unmodified polyalkylene which is the same as or different from the substrate polyalkylene, and either simultaneously or subsequently applying to the surface of the polyalkylene a solution or dispersion of a further polymer, and thereafter coating the surface with an elastomer. The polyalkylene in solution or dispersion may be formed of polypropylene or ethylene propylene copolymer, and the further polymer may be acrylic resin or styrne/butadiene resin. The elastomer may be vulcanisable or non-vulcanisable, or optionally foamed and applied as a latex. It may be formed of styrene/ butadiene, polychloroprene, polyisoprene or acrylonitrile synthetic rubbers, or of natural rubber. The elastomer is adhesive and may be used to adhere the elastomer/polyalkylene assembly to a further substrate which may be adhesively coated. The. polyalkylene to be coated may be formed as fibrous scrim material of a tufted carpet, or of woven or non-woven fabrics including "spun bonded" material.
