1401964 Machining special articles; grinding; rolling E J PRICE 10 July 1972 [10 July 1971] 32510/71 Headings B3T B3D and B3M In a method of machining an article, such as a piston, the article is mounted for rotation about a first axis and a machining tool is moved about an arcuate, part-circular path about a second axis, the first axis lying between the arcuate path and the second axis, the machining tool being moved into engagement with the rotating workpiece, the speed of rotation of the article and the movement of the tool along the arcuate path being so arranged as to completely machine the article during a single movement of the tool along its arcuate path. In the embodiments described, the article 1 is supported on a freely rotatable mandrel assembly 16 and two cutting tools 30, 31 are mounted on an annular rotatable tool carrier 23 which is driven from a motor 27 by belt 26. The article is driven by friction from a drill press 5 which engages the article and rotates both article and mandrel, the mandrel being biased by a spring 18 axially to maintain driving engagement between the member 20 and the article 1. The relationship between the axes of the tool carrier and the workpiece article permit progressive engagement of the tools with the article as the operation is carried out. Although friction drive between the drill press and article are shown alternative means such as a collet type chuck may be used. The tools shown in Fig. 2 are form tools 30, 31 to produce the required surface form on the article. However, alternative tools such as abrasive member(s) or knurling tools may be used.
