Abstract

1401937 Vertically adjustable support for chairs STEELCASE Inc 31 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 41043/73 Heading A4J A vertically adjustable support for a chair comprises a base 21, 22 in which a spindle 10 is rotatably mounted and releasably locked against rotation to allow for height adjustment of the chair seat and a column 40 supporting the chair seat and carrying a nut 30 threaded on the spindle and releasably held against rotation on the spindle to allow for rotation only of the seat by a detent washer 50 keyed to the spindle and provided with detents 52 engageable in recesses 31 in the nut. Locking of the spindle is effected by a spring- biased button 61 provided with a pair of detent fingers 62 which can be moved into engagement with slots 16 in a plate 13 secured to the spindle. Damage of the mechanism at the lowest position of height adjustment is prevented by forming the upper ends of the fingers as cam surfaces 64 which are contacted by the lower end of the column.
