Abstract

1343305 Resilient hinge assembly P G WERNER 1 April 1971 8413/71 Heading E2F [Also in Division F2] An adjustable resilient hinge comprises a fixed member 1 and a second member 9 pivotal abouta horizontal shaft 7 and biased by a spring 15 (see Division F2) to a first position defined by contact of the member 9 with abutments on the member 1, and includes a toothed 21, lever 22 pivotal about a cone 3 on the member 1 and engaging a toothed rack 19 displaceable parallel to the shaft 7 and having teeth 18 engaging oblique, parallel slots 17 in a slide 12 connected to the spring 15; rotation of the lever displaces the slide 12 and hence the spring radially of the shaft 7 to vary the biasing torque. The slide 12 and spring 15 are bifurcated to pass each side of the cone 3. To hold the lever 22 in an adjusted position, a spring 26' urges a tooth 26 on the lever into teeth 25 on the member 1: alternatively, the angle of the slots 17 may be such as to make the lever self-locking. Anti-clockwise rotation is limited by a surface 16 on the member 9 contacting abutments 31 on the member 1. The shaft 7 passes through side walls 5 of the member 1 and engages side walls 8 of the member 9, Fig. 5 (not shown). The cone 3 is fixed to a column 4 on a chair frame and the member 9 to a chair seat 11.
