Fuel, feeding; grates; ash-pits; baffles; air and steam, supplying.-An inclined shoot j, Fig. 1. for feeding fuel on to a travelling grate is d'ivided longitudinally by a screen j<1> so that, as the fuel passes over the screen, coal dust &c. passes into the passage j<2> terminating at the bottom in a hopper k, Fig. 2, from which it is forced by a steam or air blast into the furnace. A baffle m prevents the dust from being carried beyond the grate. The fuel which does not pass through the screen j<1> falls on to the travelling grate a, upon which the depth of fuel is regulated by a slide n<1>. The grate is formed of transverse bars with longitudinal tapering slits a<2>, which may be inclined towards the front of the furnace. An undulating motion is given to the grate by rollers d. A pipe e arranged between the upper and lower portions of the grate is provided for the supply of compressed air or steam jets. The side chains a<1> supporting the bare a are provided with lugs a<3>, Fig. 4, adapted to engage with forked lugs b<2> on the drums b. Ashes passing over the end of the grate fall on to a conveyer f formed of overlapping plates secured to side chains g, and are carried to the front of the ash-pit, where they are delivered on to a transverse conveyer or into trams or other receptacles. The conveyer f is run at a greater speed than the grate.
