Abstract

Fire-bars and grates; mechanical stoking; ashes, removing.-In a furnace having an inclined grate formed of perforated revolving grate bars with perforated plates between and a blast box beneath, special means are provided for feeding the fuel on to the grate and for removing the ashes that fall through the grate. Particular constructions of rotary perforated fire-bars are also provided. As shown in Fig. 1, the fuel is fed on to the grate by a rocking segmental plate d arranged within the hopper c, the fuel being caused to pass through a number of hinged flaps f. The supply of fuel is regulated by adjusting the position of the crank-pin on the crank h and the connexion between the rod d<2> and the arm d<1>. The rotary grate bars a and the intermediate plates b are arranged above the blast box k to which the blast is supplied by the pipe l. Small coal mixed with ash falling through the front part of the grate is caught by a hopper m, or may be conveyed forwards by a worm s as shown in Fig. 2. The ash falling through the rear part of the grate may fall into another hopper n, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, provided with a hinged flap, or delivered by another conveyer t shown in Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 1, the ash-discharging device at the rear may comprise a rotary pocketed drum o driven by the rear grate bar. The grate and blast box are carried by wheels x to facilitate their removal from the furnace. As shown in Fig. 3, the interiors of the grate bars are flared towards one end to facilitate the discharge of ash that enters the hollow bars. The flaring may proceed from the centre towards both ends of the bars. Figs. 4 and 5 show two forms of conical grate bars with intermediate perforated plates between, while Fig. 6 shows a further modification in which the perforated rotary bars are grooved to impart a zigzag movement to the fuel.
