Abstract
1401786 Screw-and-nut gearing W S SHAMBAN & CO 19 Sept 1972 43380/72 Heading F2Q In a screw and nut assembly comprising a screw member 33 and a nut member 19 having threads in tight engagement with each other, the nut 19 is formed of deformable material, such as an elastomeric material, which is under precompression in order to maintain the tight engagement. Fig. 2 shows the preferred size relationship between a helical rib 45 on the screw 33 and a helical rib 41 on the nut under no-load conditions. When assembled, the ribs form an interference fit. The nut 19 is mounted in a sleeve 21 of soft, deformable material such as an elastomeric material, and is located between end rings 23, 25. The nut 19 may be preloaded radially and/or axially. The deformable material may comprise a mixture of a flowable plastic such as polytetrafluoroethylene and a finely divided metal such as bronze. In a modification, a nut 19a is axially preloaded by a screw-threaded stud 53, Fig. 4. In another modification, a nut 19b, Fig. 5, comprises a core 55 of steel and a lining 57 of deformable material.
