1401518 Anti-acne preparations MERCK & CO INC 18 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 58384/72 Heading A5B An anti-acne gel, emulsion or unflavoured lotion comprises (a) an inert pharmaceutical diluent and (b) a compound of formula or a salt thereof wherein R is C 6-16 alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or alkylthioalkyl, R<SP>1</SP> is H or lower alkyl, x is 1 or 2 and A is one of (i) C 2-12 alkylene in which the two valencies connecting to the remainder of the molecule are not on the same carbon atom, (ii) a group of formula wherein m and n are 2-6 and Y is 0 or S (iii) a group of formula (iv) a group of formula wherein Z and Z' are C 1-3 alkylene or (v) a group of formula wherein Q is O, S, SO, SO 2 or a group of formula Compounds specified include 1, 1'-hexamethylene-bis[5-(n-hexyl)-biguamide], the corresponding n-heptyl, n-octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, nonyl, 3- hexyl, 3-octyl, and decyl compounds, 1, I'-hexamethylene-bis[5-(1, 1, 3, 3-tetramethylbutyl)- biguamide], and 1, 1'-(2-methyl-1, 4-butylene) bis[5-(heptyl)-biguanide].
