Abstract

1401370 Reaction chambers; jet propulsion plant Y KAIHO 18 May 1973 23745/73 Headings F1J and F1L [Also in Divisions B7 and F4] In an apparatus for generating motive power, a reaction chamber is pre-heated by means of hydrogen peroxide injection devices 22 and a mixture of granular metal (e.g. aluminium powder) water being supplied under pressure by means of a piston 2 and an electrically driven screw pump 6 through a nozzle 12 into the centre C of the reaction chamber, the water being vaporized into highpressure steam causing the metal granules to be injected as a fine spray into the reaction chamber. Water is also supplied through a pipe 13 into an inlet tube 14 to be heated and vaporized into high temperature steam which is delivered along passages 15, 16 to the reaction chamber through steam nozzles 17 adjacent to nozzle 12. A third supply of water is injected into the reaction chamber through a nozzle 21 to complete the exothermic reaction. The high temperature, high pressure steam generated is used as motive power by the ejection of the steam through an outlet 30 into an engine outer cylinder 25 which may take the form of a jet engine as shown wherein the ambient fluid medium is water which enters the engine outer cylinder 25 at 35 and exits through an outlet 38. The ambient fluid medium can be air. Heat sensors 26 and 31 measure the temperature in the reaction chamber and the reaction-gas outlet. The injectors 22 are formed with a catalyst through which the hydrogen peroxide passes. Hydrazine (N 2 H 4 ) is introduced under pressure through an auxiliary fuel nozzle 24 of the injector so that the hydrazine reacts with oxygen simultaneously with the nozzle injection and ignites spontaneously.
