Abstract

1400727 Maleic acid imide copolymer FILMFABRIK WOLFEN VEB 14 Sept 1972 42711/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] A copolymer comprises structural units of the general formula or a quaternary salt thereof and structural units of the general formula in which formulae R 1 denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, and R 2 denotes an alkyl group or an aryl group, or R 1 , R 2 and N together denote a saturated, nitrogen-containing, heterocyclic ring, R 3 denotes a hydrogen atom, an aryl group or a carboxyl group, and R 4 denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group. In the examples copolymers of styrene and N-(3- diethylamino-2-hydroxy-propyl)-maleic acid imide,N-(2-hydroxy-3-piperidino-propyl)-maleic acid imide and N-(2-hydroxy-3-morpholinopropyl)-maleic acid imide are prepared by treating styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer with 1-amino-2-hydroxy-3-diethylamino-propane, 1-amino-2-hydroxy-3-piperidino-propane and 1-amino-2-hydroxy-3-morpholino-propane. In Example 1D the first product is treated with dimethyl sulphate to give the quaternary salt.
