Abstract

1400722 Ignition systems; timing ignition LUCAS ELECTRICAL CO Ltd 16 Nov 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 59503/71 Heading F1B A spark ignition system for an internalcombustion engine comprises in combination a semi-conductor switch (transistor 71), means (not shown) operable when the switch is operated for producing a spark, a generator 62 driven by the engine and producing for each revolution of the engine crank-shaft 61 a number of analogue output signals equal to the number of sparks required during each revolution, each output signal changing in magnitude from a first value at a predetermined datum position of the crank-shaft to a second value, means 65 for producing an analogue electrical control signal having a magnitude which is determined by the values of at least two parameters of the engine and is representative of the required ignition timing angle measured from the datum position, a comparator 63 to which the output signal from the generator 62 and the control signal are fed and further means operable by the comparator when the two signals it receives are equal for operating the switch to produce a spark. The comparator controls the switch through the intermediary of a bi-stable circuit 69. Means for driving the bi-stable circuit back to its original state comprises a second comparator 64 connected to the generator and to additional means 66 for producing a further analogue electrical control signal.
