Abstract

1400447 Sound insulation TAC CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL Ltd 11 Aug 1972 [13 Aug 1971] 38189/71 Heading F2X [Also in Division B5] A sound insulating structure comprises a backing member 1 of a sound insulating composite material, a layer 5 of a porous sound absorbent material which is substantially inert to the surrounding environment and which at least partly covers the backing member to prevent reverberation, a non-porous flexible skin 6 covering the sound absorbent layer to prevent ingress of liquids and an open-work shield 7 having an open area of at least 10%, covering the flexible skin and protecting it from mechanical damage. It is stated that it is not necessary for any of the components to contact an adjacent component. The flexible skin may envelop the porous sound-absorbent layer. The openwork shield may envelop the flexible skin. The backing member preferably has inherent self-damping properties and may comprise an asbestos fibre-reinforced phenol-formaldehyde resin. The porous sound-absorbent materal is preferably non-inflammable and may be a mineral wool, glass fibre or asbestos fibre may or a polyurethane foam. The flexible skin may be a polyethylene or polyester, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate film, an impregnated paper or a thin metal foil and may be applied by in situ spraying of a thermoplastic or elastomer solution or emulsion before or after placing the absorbent layer over the backing layer. The open-work shield is preferably made of corrosion resistant material and may be raised, ridged or dimpled to provide channels between the shield and the film, it may comprise an expanded aluminium or steel sheet or a perforated metal or asbestos based sheet. The embodiment described relates to a diesel engined vehicle drip tray, surface 2 of member 1 being treated with aluminium paint, member 1 being provided with flanges 3 adapted to be used to attach the tray to vehicle chassis members 4, and ribs, ridges or additional reinforcement being incorporated on member 1 for strengthening the member. In a modification, the absorbent layer may be formed from spaced side-by-side strips of a mineral wool butt. In a further embodiment, the layer 5 and skin 6 extend only over the sides of the vessel.
