Abstract

1400004 Lining tunnels &c ENVIRONMENT SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 27 Sept 1972 [30 June 1971] 15795/71 Heading E1F A tunnel-lining segment comprises a metal frame having two curved side members 12, 14 and two end members 16, 18, the inside face of each of the side and end members being so formed that the space defined by the frame tapers towards the axis of the tunnel. The two side members 12 and 14 taper on the inside of the frame so as to be reduced in axial thickness away from the axis of the tunnel. The space is divided by ribs 20, 22 and is filled with concrete either before or after installation in the tunnel. The frame which is of spheroidal-graphite cast iron, is provided with key slots (54), (56), Figures 5 and 6 (not shown), in its side members for the reception of keys (58) to connect axiallyadjacent segments, the keys being retained in position by means of wedges (68), (74). Circumferentially-adjacent segments are connected by means of dogs (82) and dog slots (80), Figure 7B (not shown). A lining ring is completed by the installation at the top thereof of a key segment (84), Figure 4 (not shown), or a folding wedge device (90), Figure 8 (not shown). The segment frame is provided with sealable holes 88 for the injection of grout between the segment and tunnel wall, and blind holes 100 for the attachment of shuttering and/or accessories. In the case where the frame is filled with concrete before installation, the frame is arranged on a correspondinglycurved support (102), Figure 9 (not shown), and filled. The support may have pores and be provided with a pump P to withdraw water from the concrete, and also may be vibrated.
