Abstract

1399832 Refractory containing composition STEETLEY (MFG) Ltd 12 June 1972 [12 March 1971] 6720/71 Heading C1J A substantially dry refractory containing composition suitable for projection on to furnace linings comprises as chemically distinct components (i) a particulate, non-acidic refractory material, (ii) a dry powdered binding agent readily developing adhesive properties on treatment with water and capable of imparting strength to the lining at temperatures up to 750‹ C. and (iii) a powdered hydrated metal salt containing 6 or more water molecules of hydration which releases water of crystallisation at 50-300‹ C. The refractory material may be dead-burned dolomite, dead burned magnesia, dead-burned lime, chrome ores or mixtures thereof. The binding agent may be sulphite lye, a silicate (e.g. Na or K), dextrin or gum. The hydrated metal salt may be sodium sulphate, magnesium sulphate, an alum, chromous sulphate, zirconium sulphite, ferrous sulphate, dibasic sodium phosphate or tribasic sodium phosphate. The composition may also contain plasticizing compounds, e.g. bentonite, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, water-soluble polymers, chopped slag wool fibres and chopped carbon fibres. Particle size of refractory material may be - 5 (B.S.S.) mesh and of binding agent and hydrated metal salt -7 mesh. In the example the preparation of a gunning composition containing dead-burned dolomite (94 wt. parts), sulphite lye (2 wt. parts and potash alum (4 wt. parts) is described.
