Abstract

A refractory composition consists of non-acid refractory particles, 2-12% of a cokable pitch having a softening point of at least 200 DEG F. and 0.5-5.0% of at least one bonding agent soluble in a liquid tempering agent for the composition comprising an alkali metal silicate or phosphate, aluminium phosphate, magnesium chloride or sulphate, a soluble chromium compound, waste sulphite liquor, lignin sulphate, a carbohydrate, e.g. starch, molasses dextrin and gum, or a soluble boron compound. The pitch may comprise 5-8% of the composition. The composition may also contain 0.05-4% of a plasticizing agent, e.g. methylcellulose and 1-4% of plastic bonding clay, e.g. bentonite. The refractory material may be dead burned magnesia or periclase, dead burned magnesite, chromite, magnesia spinels, dead burned dolomite or silica-stabilized dolomite or mixtures thereof.
