Abstract

1399745 Folding tower cranes RICHIER 30 June 1972 [30 June 1971] 30888/72 Heading B8B A tower crane which may be folded for transport comprises a base 1 arranged in use to run on a track 49 and pivotally mounting at 2 a lower tower section 3 to which is pivoted at 5 an upper tower section 6. Rigid links 22, 23 are pivoted together at 20 and, respectively, at 24, 25 to the lower and upper tower sections 3, 6. A further rigid link 13 is pivoted at 15 to the base 1 and at 14 to the upper tower section 6. A jib 7 is pivoted at 17 to the upper tower section 6 and is provided with a counterweight jib 47 and a load carriage 11. The jib 7 is divided by a vertical hinge 45 into elements 7a, 7b. In the transport position, Fig. 1 (not shown), the jib element 7b is folded alongside the jib element 7a, both lying above and alongside the upper tower section 6, while the lower tower section 3 lies below and alongside the upper tower section 6 being supported by a removable wheel (43). In the transport position the upper tower section 6 is supported, so as to be horizontal, on a tractor 48 adjacent point 18, the counterweight jib 47 being removed. As shown the crane is in the course of erection. A counterweight 46 is attached by a cable 52 to the base 1 and by a cable 53, initially slack, to the end of the counterweight jib 47. A winch 10 on the jib 7a normally operates a lifting cable (not shown) but is used to erect the crane by hauling in a pulley system 36 which pulls in a cable 29 passing around pulleys 27, 28 at the pivots 5, 20 to reduce the distance d between them. This action brings the tower sections 3, 6 into end-toend position, the linkage 13 causing the tower automatically to become upright. The cable 53 is initially slack but when it becomes taut it causes the jib 7 to assume its horizontal operating position where it is secured by pins at 18. The cable 52 is then released and the counterweight 46 hauled to its operating position, the load carriage 11 then being connected for use.
