Abstract
1399570 High pressure apparatus FRIED KRUPP GmbH 25 April 1973 [26 April 1972] 19615/73 Heading B1X Apparatus for subjecting material to high pressure, e.g. for the production of diamonds, comprises three die rings 1, 2 and 3 of high tensile metal surrounding a cylindrical pressure space 12 for containing the material, e.g. in deformable tube 11, oppositely movable truncated conical piston assemblies, 8 and 8a, for subjecting the material to pressure and heat derived from electric current flowing in the piston assemblies, a retaining ring 4 of high tensile steel surrounding the die rings, pressureresistant electrically-insulating material 7 between the die-rings themselves and between the die rings and retaining ring, and a frusoconical packing of deformable metallic mater ial, 9, 9a, between each piston assembly and adjacent die ring. The electrically-insulating material 7 is suitably made of layers of mica. Each intermediate piston, 10, 10a, may be surrounded at one end of the packing by a 'ring 13 of deformable material such as lead. The current to the pistons is supplied through structures 14, 14a through which the force is applied by means not shown. Electrically insulated rings 15, 15a of plastics material avoid distortion of the apparatus and act as safety rings. Charts may be prepared using an equation which is provided and the pressure read off at any time during operation and is necessary adjusted.
