Abstract

1,022,973. Very high pressure apparatus. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Dec. 19, 1962 [Dec. 27, 1961], No. 47872/62. Heading B1X. A very high pressure apparatus comprises an annular pressure chamber defined by two end surfaces, side surfaces and a body centrally located along the axis of the chamber; said side surfaces being formed by the inner faces of inwardly movable pressure transmitting blocks and said end surfaces being formed by the faces of pressure resisting means which are sealed to said blocks and do not move along the axis in relation to said chamber when said blocks move inwardly. An embodiment illustrated in Fig. 6 (not shown) has an inner body of small compressibility in the form of a cylinder, centrally placed in the annular pressure chamber. In Fig. 1 (and Fig. 2, not shown), the pressure chamber comprises five sector-shaped blocks 100 having hardened sections 101, of conical outside section having gaps 102 between them, said blocks surrounding the material (graphite or molybdenum disulphide) to be compressed. The material is enclosed by annular layers 124 and 126 of talcum or pyrophyllite. The central body comprises a tapered peg 121 attached to hydraulic piston 108 which slides upwardly to force five annular, internally conical sections 123 outwardly whereby the material may be precompressed. The ring 156 contacts faces 157 of the blocks 100 causing them to be forced upwards. They are constrained inwardly as a result of wedge action with a corresponding shaped casing 111 and thus compress material 125. The interface 149 may be lubricated with graphite, molybdenum disulphide or oil. An opposing member 107 sliding within retaining ring 112 and having disposed between it and an end stop 115, a fluid medium such as oil or water admitted through valve 117, serves to control and contain the pressure around material 125. The pressure chamber may be cooled by a cooling medium passing through tube 133-136. Sealing means 142, Fig. 6 (not shown), serve to contain the material charge within the pressure chamber. The material 125 may be heated by passing a current therethrough when conductive, or by tubes, discs, threads, spirals or other bodies of electric resistance material embedded in the reaction mixture, current being supplied via conduit 145 to the piston 108 and led away via the piston 107 and a cable 146.
