Abstract

1399394 Registering webs J BOBST & FILS SA 29 Sept 1972 [8 Oct 1971] 45085/72 Heading B8R [Also in Division G3] Longitudinal misregistration in a multistation, web-fed printing press is corrected by determining the registration error downstream of a downstream station, calculating the web tension between the downstream and an upstream station necessary to correct the error, and controlling the web tension between these two stations accordingly. Misregistration is sensed by a device 12 and a computer C calculates from a particular error signal e i , the summation of error signals and the difference between the successive error signals the required correcting tension Tc. The actual tension Tm measured by a sensor 13 is subtracted from Tc in a regulator 2 and the resulting signal fed via a limiting device to an actuator 3 which moves roller 20 to vary the web tension. In an alternative embodiment in which the sensor 13 is dispensed with, the change in elongation of the web is calculated from the rate of change of registration error at the locations of two sensors (41), (42), Fig. 8 (not shown), and from the change of position of the roller 20 sensed at (43), the elongation change being proportional to web tension and equivalent to Tm. In a third embodiment the sensor 13 is replaced by a tension source, Fig. 6 (not shown), which imposes a tension, equivalent to Tm, on the web. The tension sensor may be in the form of a spring urged roller (52), Fig. 9 (not shown), around which the web is looped and to which an induction sensor (60) is connected.
