Abstract

1366743 Winding webs A AHLSTROM OSAKEYHTIO 25 Sept 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 44290/72 Heading B8R In a web winding operation, the web roll 1 is supported on a driven support roller 2 which, in response to sensors which sense the shape of the roll, is bendable so as to conform to the shape of the roll. The sensors may be in the form of rollers 3 mounted in arms pivotable about an adjustable bar 8 and urged with equal pressure towards the roll circumference by an hydraulic system, at least some of the rollers being connected to transducers 10, 11, 12 which produce electrical signals fed via an averaging calculator 19 to a valve in a pneumatic or hydraulic circuit which supplies fluid under pressure to longitudinal chambers within the hollow roller 2 to effect bending. The sensors &c. may co-operate with a bend sensor 9 and be set to produce a bend in the support roller 2 equal to that sensed by the rollers 3, to give a barrel-shaped roll as illustrated, e.g. for winding stiff webs. For limp webs, the sensors, &c. may be set to detect deviation of the top of the roll from a straight line profile and bend the roller 2 accordingly to retain such a profile, Fig. 6 (not shown). In an alternative embodiment, the sensors comprise rollers (33), Fig. 9 (not shown) connected to pressure sensitive transducers (35), (36) a chang in roll shape causing a change in the pressure sensed at the rollers and effecting alteration of the bend in the support roller 2. The support roller may be supplemented by an additional, bendable idler roller for supporting the roll.
