Abstract

1373203 Transverse registering HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK AG 16 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 12711/73 Heading B8R An apparatus for controlling transverse register of a transparent web 14 passed over a tube former 7 in a bag making machine comprises a roller 2 controlling the register by pressing the web resiliently against a supporting surface 16, 17 associated with the tube former 7, the roller 2 being mounted for rotation about an axis 5 extending perpendicularly with respect to the axis of the roller and rotated in response to position sensed by at least one edge sensor 18, 21. In operation the web 14 fed to the former 7 is monitored by a pair of pneumatic sensors 18 which sense the displacement of edges 20, 21 and apply pressure variation signals to respective servo-control devices 30, 31 associated with valves 32, 33 which actuate a doubleacting cylinder 12 to pivot a rod 10 coupled to the axis 5 to pivot the roller 2 in a register correcting direction. The sensors 18 are formed by annular nozzles (22, Fig. 3) associated with concentric bores (27) which sense the pressure variations caused by transverse web edge migration. Pneumatic sensors can be replaced by electro-magnetic or photo-electric sensbrs, the latter being suitable for an opaque web. Valves 32, 33 would then be replaced by electro-magnets.
