Abstract

1398977 Gas detector EMI Ltd 4 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46573/71 Heading G1A A non-dispersive infrared gas detector is used in a fire and/or intruder alarm system. Radiation from a tungsten filament lamp 2 is internally reflected along an internally reflectively coated tube towards a lead selenide cell 5. An interference filter 4 allows infrared only to reach the detector. Ingress of e.g. CO 2 , CO, methane via entries 21 or apertures at 22, causes absorption of radiation and an alarm, audible and/or visible, to be actuated if the amplitude change or rate of change is sufficient. CO 2 is indicative of a fire, an intruder's breath or use of heat generating apparatus. The filter 4 is chosen for the gas to be detected. A multi-channel arrangement for detecting two or more gases may be provided by a segmented structure and plurality of filters. A filter wheel and single detector may be used. The lamp output is modulated and a tuned amplifier 8 used, to reduce noise. A phase sensitive detector circuit 9 is coupled to the amplifier.
