Abstract

1,100,810. Photo-electric gas monitoring. RESEARCH APPLIANCE CO. June 2, 1965 [June 3, 1964], No. 23586/65. Heading G1A. A gaseous or particulate component of a gas is detected by passing the gas through a test area of a tape which darkens either due to chemical reaction of the gaseous component with the tape or on the other hand due to deposition of the particles. The darkening of the tape is sensed photo-electrically and upon reaching a predetermined value causes the tape to be shifted to expose a fresh test area to the gas 3; if the predetermined level is reached within a predetermined time, thereby indicating an undesirable concentration of the component an alarm is additionally sounded. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, a gas stream containing hydrogen sulphide enters at tube 57, passes through a lead acetate tape 15, and exhausts via tube 56. The tape is forced against a sealing ring 47 by a lower ring 49 for the period of the test and upon the light falling on photo-cell 54 reaching a predetermined value, the solenoid 59 is operated to lower the ring 49 and permit the tape to be advanced. For each fresh test area before the period of the test begins and before there is any detectable darkening by the gas. The instrument is automatically calibrated by adjusting the intensity of the lamp until the detector output has a standard value, thereby compensating for variations in the opacity of the tape.
