902,732. Infra-red fluid analysis. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 3, 1959 [Nov. 4, 1958; Feb. 17, 1959; May 14, 1959], Nos. 35304/58, 5525/59 and 16570/59. Class 40 (3). In infra-red gas analysis apparatus differing wavebands of light pass through an absorbtion tube sequentially and repeatedly to a detector, the output of which is an absorption signal at one frequency and a standardizing signal at a second frequency, means being provided to compare said signals. In the light beam between a source 1 (Fig. 1 of the second Provisional Specification), and an absorption tube 6 are a chopper 3 interrupting the light beam at 1000 c/s. and a narrow band filter 5 rocked to and fro at 2 c/s. The output of the photo-cell 7 is therefore a 1000 c/s carrier signal modulated at 2 c/s by the filter 5. On demodulation a D.C. voltage proportional to the carrier signal controls the photo-cell voltage to eliminate spurious intensity variations. Filter 5 may be replaced by two band-pass filters transversely oscillated alternately into and out of the light beam. In a second embodiment the filter and chopper are replaced by a compound filter (Fig. 2 of the first Provisional Specification). Sections S transmit a wavelength which is absorbed by the test gas and sections R and T transmit wavelengths not absorbed. Thus absorption and standardizing signals, at different frequencies, emanate from the photo-cell. The standardizing signal is fed to the slide wire of a self-balancing potentiometer to the signal input of which is applied the absorption signal, or alternatively controls the gain of an absorption signal amplifier.
