Abstract
1398482 Twisting wires together H ELINEAU 11 April 1973 [23 May 1972] 17469/73 Heading B3E [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for tying coils of wire comprises means for placing tie-wire elements along the inner and outer surfaces of the coil, and means for twisting the elements ends together comprising a member having a head for receiving the two ends and movable in translation and rotation, and a backing-plate opposed to the head and acting to restrain displacement of the wire during rotation of the member. The coil 6, Fig. 3, is conveyed on a hook to a compacting and tying station where it is supported on bars parallel to its axis which are raised to take the weight of the coil, though the hook remains in position. The coil is compacted by axial pressure, Fig. 1 (not shown), and readjusted in height so that it is correctly aligned with two pairs of arms 13 (one pair shown, Fig. 3) spaced at 90 degree intervals around its periphery and pivoted at 11 to a carriage 15 slidable by a first hydraulic jack (not shown) on a fixed rod 17. The arms are pivotable by rods 22 connected to a further carriage 23 slidable by a second hydraulic jack (not shown) on a sleeve 16 of the carriage 15. At the beginning of a cycle, the arms 13 are pivoted together so that their ends cross, and the ends of wires 24 are gripped by grippers (not shown) on the ends of the arms. The arms are then separated as shown by operation of the second jack to cross the wires on the near side of the coil, Fig. 10, and the first jack is operated to pass the arms one outside and one through the coil drawing the wires with them, and then the second jack is operated to close the arms together and cross the wires on the far side of the coil (see Fig. 5, not shown). At each of the eight crossing points a twisting device is then made operative, Fig. 6. A twisting member 27 is mounted for rotary and longitudinal movement, and is keyed to a pinion 42 on arm 48 meshing with a sun gear 39, the arm and sun gear being fixed and rotatable respectively on a sleeve 43 slidable on fixed shaft 41 by jack 51. When the jack is operated to advance the twisting member 27 to engage the crossed wires, shoulder 37, spring 55, and plate 54 rotate levers 52 on fixed pins 53 to bring together the two halves 28a of a backing plate 28, see Fig. 13, so that two offset grooves 58 are formed engaging the crossed wires. The end of the head of twisting member 27 is shown in Figs. 10 and 11, and includes a central aperture 61, grooves 57 receiving the crossed wires, and recesses 62 flanked by shear members 63 co-operating with fixed shear members 64. When the twisting members 27 and backing- plates 28 are in position, gear 39 is rotated to effect twisting of the sheared wire ends to form knots within the apertures 61, the knots having the free wire ends turned down. The twisting elements are then withdrawn, the arms 13 returned to their initial positions, and the coil supporting bars lowered to suspend the tied coil on the hook.
