This invention relates to machines for forming wire hooks of the type described in our cop-ending application, Serial No. 124,469. 7
The primary objectof this invention is to provide a machine of the above mentioned character adapted to form and so bend upon itself a piece of blank wire so as to form a hook in a less number of operations and in less time than has heretofore been accomplished.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which may be operated either by manual power or by mechanical power such as an engine or the like.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a machine of the type described wherein the blank wire is fed intermittently either by hand or any suitable feed mechanism such as is commonly used in machines of this type.
A still further object of this invention is to produce a,device of the above mentioned character which comprises comparatively few parts and which is simple in operation and construction. I

Figs. 4- and 5 and taken on the same area in which is shown the operating levers in their operative position and showing the wire hook completed.
In the drawing above briefly described, th numeral 10 designates a base having openings 11 through which screws may pass to hold the base to a work bench or other suitable support. A vertical upright bearis formed at right angles to ng support 12 the base 10 and is also provided with a latis bent at right eral extension 13 which angles at its outer end to form the opposite and corresponding bearing support 1 1 A pair of opposite upright bearing supports 15 are formed on the bearing supports 12 and 14k to form an abutment 16 for the wire blank 1 V.
A shaft 17 is mounted to rotate in the opposrte bearing supports 12 and 14 and is provided with a crank arin18 to which is fastened a handle 19 for imparting rotary motion thereto. Mounted between the bearingsupports 12 and 14 and rigidly carried by the shaft 17 is a hook forming drum 20 av ng awire engaging hook '21. The side edges of the drum 2O abut against the inside walls of the bearing supports 12 and 1-1 thereby limiting the lateral movement of the rotary shaft 17. The rotary motion of the shaft 17 is limited by the stop mechanism which includes a collar 22 rigidly mounted upon the shaft 17 and adapted to rotate therewith having a set screw 23 threaded in the periphery of the collar adapted to abut against the stop pin 24 carried by the outside wall of the bearing support 14.
The above described mechanism constitntes the apparatus for forming the hook portionof the wire hook.
The apparatus for forming the eye of the wire hook includes a pair of opposite cam members 25 and 26 having opposite complementary cam faces 2'? and 28. The opposite cam members 25 and 26 are spaced apart andare rigidly connected by the cross b'ar 29. The retractile bearing 33 is reciprocated by a hand lever 36 mounted between the yoke 37 formed on the outer end of the lever supporting rod 38 which is laterally extended from the side wall of the vertical bearing support 14.
A bolt 40 extends through the operating lever 36 for holding the lever 36 pivoted thereon. One end of the retractile bearing 33 is journaled in a clevis 41 fastened to the operating lever 36 by a bolt 42 passing therethrough and fastened by a nut 43 threaded thereon. By moving the lever 36 upon the pivot bolt 40, the bearing rod 33 is axially shifted to extend the rod 33 across the space between the cam members 25 and 26, or to reversely shift the red as desired.
Mounted upon a cross bar 44 positioned below the cam members 25 and 26 is a separating table 45 held thereon by a machine screw 45 for spacing the ends of the wire blank WV before they align with the flanged eccentrically mounted spool 30 prior to being coiled about the retractile bearing 33.
Any suitable means may be provided for measuring the length of the wire blanks fed into the device such as a rod 46 having screw threads at one of its ends for engaging corresponding screw threads in the outer wall of the upright bearing 12. The other end of the rod 46 is provided with an abutment 47 held thereon by the nuts 48 and the lock washers 49 which engage screw threads 50 cut on the outer end of the rod 46.
The operation of the device is as follows: The wire blank IV is positioned against the abutment 16 formed by the bearing extension supports 15, the handle 19 is then rotated in a clockwise direction until the wire engaging hook 21 has engaged the wire blank W and carried about the periphery of the drum 20 as shown best in Fig. 5 of the drawings. I Vhen the rotation of the drum 20 is stopped by the pin 24 it is held in this position. It will be noted that the ends of the wire blank are now resting against the eccentrically mounted spool 30, one end on each side of the flange 31 formed thereon. While the wire blank is held in this position the retractile bearing 33 is pushed through the openings 34 and 35 of the cam members 25 and 26 and the bearing extensions 15 respectively. The lever 32 is then rotated counter clockwise to effect the rotation of the cam members 25 and 26 about the retractile bearing 33. This operation forms the eyes on the ends of the wire blank as best shown in Fig. 6.
The cam members 25 and 26 act in such a manner as to bring the ends of the wire blank W close together "so that they will slide upon the cam faces 27 and 28 thereby bringing the two ends against the eccentrically mounted spool 30 carried between the two cam members.
It will be seen from the foregoing that a very simple and inexpensive, yet a convenient and highly desirable device has been provided, and as excellent results may be obtained from the details disclosed, they may well be followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made.
Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. In a device of the character described, a base, a pair of vertical bearing supports carried by the base, a shaft rotatably mounted in the bearing supports, a drum rotatably carried by the shaft provided with a wire engaging hook on the periphery thereof, a pair of spaced opposite cam members rotatably mounted between the bearing supports laterally of the drum, an eccentrically mounted spool for connecting the pair of opposite spaced cam members and a retractile bearing for the pair of opposite spaced cam members adapted to be reciprocated for being moved into and out of the openings in the bearing support extensions and the opposite spaced cam members.
2. In a device of the character described, a base, a pair of vertical bearing supports carried by the base, a shaft journaled in the bearing supports, having a crank at one end for imparting a rotary motion to the shaft, a drum rigidly mounted on the shaft having a wire engaging hook, a pair of spaced opposite cam members mounted between the bearing supports laterally of the drum, an eccentrically mounted spool connecting the pair of spaced cam members, means for rotating the cam members, a retractile bearing for the cam members and means for imparting a reciprocating motion to the retractile bearing.
In a device of the character described, a base, a pair of vertical bearing supports carried by the base, a shaft rotatably mounted in the bearing supports, a drum rotatably carried by the shaft having a wire engaging hook on the periphery thereof, a pair of spaced opposite cam members having oppositely flaring cam faces mounted between the bearing supports laterally of the drum, a flanged spool connecting the pair of opposite spaced cam members, and a retractile bearing for the pair of opposite spaced cam members adapted to be moved into and out of the openings in the bearing support extensions and the opposite spaced cam members.

In a device of the character described, a base, a pair of vertical bearing supports carried by the base, a shaft rotatably mounted in the bearing supports, a drum rotatably carried by the shaft provided with a wire engaging hook, a pair of spaced opposite cam members having oppositely flaring cam faces rotatably mounted between the bearing supports laterally of the drum. an eccentrically mounted flanged spool connecting the pair of oppositely spaced cam nien'ibers and a retractile bearing for the pair of opposite spaced cam members, adapted to be reciproeated for being moved into and out of the openings in the bearing support extensions and the opposite spaced cam members.
5. In a device of the character described,
a base, a drum rotatably carried by the base having a hook adapted to engage a Wire blank for coiling it about the drum, means supported by the base for forming eyes on the ends of the wire blank including a pivoted Wire former and a retractile core upon which each of the ends of the Wire blank is coiled adapted to be retracted for moving the core out of the path of the eyes after said eyes are formed thereon.
