Abstract

1397942 Strengthening existing beams ROXBURGH DINARDO and PARTNERS 28 Dec 1972 [29 Feb 1972] 9218/72 Headings E1S and E1W Part or all the dead load of a concrete beam 1 in a building is transferred to a U- section steel beam 4 secured alongside it. The beam 4 has L-section brackets 7 welded to its web and is initially fixed to the side of the beam 1 by temporary supporting studs 6 so that the projecting flanges of the brackets 7 with their associated spacers 19 engage under the lower edge of the beam 1. The load is then transferred to the steel beam 4 by tensioning the high tensile steel bars 13 by means of the nuts 14 or 17 between the lower flange of the steel beam 4 and a bearing plate 9 positioned on the overlying floor slab 3 adjacent to the supporting columns 2 at each end of the beam 4.
