Abstract

1397794 Carbon fibres COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 15 June 1973 [28 April 1972] 19831/72 Heading C1A In producing carbon fibres or filaments by first reacting carbonizable organic fibres or filaments with a reactive gas or liquid to prevent the fibres or filaments from melting and to render them carbonizable and then carbonizing the treated fibres, the organic fibres or filaments are attached to a porous or perforated hollow tubular former, and are then reacted with said gas or liquid by passing this through the pores or perforations in the former and past the fibres on the former or vice versa. Preferably the former has a circular cross-section, and it may be made of carbon or graphite. It is preferred that the liquid or gas is passed radially outwards through the pores or perforations and that the former is porous. The starting fibres may be polyacrylontrile, pitch, or, especially, coal extract fibres.
