Pulleys.-In rope transmission for lifts and the like, the sides of the groove in the driving-sheave are arranged in sections having varying angles of convergence, in order that the rope may be pinched in the groove and the traction maintained practically constant notwithstanding the wear of the sheave and the rope. As shown in Fig. 5, the upper part of the groove is so shaped that, in the original position, The rope makes contact over the arcs lm and on, and the lower part of the groove is so proportioned, according to the wear of the sheave and rope, that these arcs of contact and the consequent tractive force are maintained constant during the life of the sheave and rope.
