1397300 Laminates including polymeric adhesives ASAHI DOW Ltd 11 Oct 1972 [11 Oct 1971 11 July 1972] 46793/72 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C3 and H1] Substrates selected from metals and alloys, glasses, polyolefin resins, polyamide resins, vinyl chloride resins, and vinylidene chloride resins may be laminated by interposing therebetween, layers of an adhesive copolymer comprising units (CH 2 CH 2 ) a , CHR<SP>11</SP>CR<SP>1</SP>COOH) b , (CHR<SP>11</SP>CR<SP>1</SP>COOM) c and (CHR<SP>11</SP>CR<SP>1</SP>COOR) d wherein M 's a metal, R is C 1-5 alkyl, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are H or C 1-5 alkyl, 100x(b+c+d)/(a+b+c+d is 1 to 20, 100 x (b + c)/(b + c + d) is 70 to 99 and 1 < 100 x c/(b + c) < 10. The laminates may be prepared by hot pressing preformed sheets or the adhesive and/or resin may be extruded on to, or applied as a powder or solution and hot pressed on to a substrate. Specified laminates include aluminium foil/copolymer and zinc foil or polyethylene containing carbon black; steel pipe/copolymer and polyethylene; metal/copolymer/foamed polyethylene; nylon/ copolymer and polyethylene or vinyl chloride resin; vinyl chloride resin/copolymer/polyethylene; H-shaped steel bar with copolymer/nylon laminated to one face and bottles with vinylidene chloride resin outer layer, copolymer intermediate layer and polyethylene inner layer. In examples adhesives comprising ethylene/methyl methacrylate copolymers partially saponified with sodium hydroxide and treated with acetic or hydrochloric acid are bonded to (8) alu minium, polyethylene and nylon film, (9) nylon film, (11) vinylidene chloride resin film and (12) glass; and are used to bond (1) aluminium foil to aluminium foil, aluminium foil to polyethylene, steel to polyethylene and aluminium foil to a composition of polyethylene, ethylene/vinyl acetate and carbon black, and to bond (2 to 7) aluminium foil to polyethylene.
