Abstract

1512735 Laminates BASF AG 25 Sept 1975 [26 Sept 1974] 39262/75 Heading B5N A formable laminate comprises a base of fibre-reinforced plastics material and a metallic foil bonded to one or each surface of the base, the or each foil consisting of a metal having a thickness of foam 10 to 2,000 Ám and an elongation at break (measured by DIW 53, 455) of more than 10%. The foil, which may be bonded to the base by an adhesive e.g. a carboxylcontaining olefin copolymer may be formed of aluminium, copper, lead, tin, magnesium or an alloy of at least two said metals. Fibres specified for use as the reinforcement are those of glass, carbon and graphite, exemplified plastics materials being polyolefins, styrene polymers and polyamides. The laminate may be made continuously by the method of Specification 1,451,824 by extruding the plastics between heated glass fibre mats at 150 to 300‹C and passing the resultant assembly together with a metal and an adhesive film through pressing means where the final assembly is cooled under pressure, a decorative layer being optionally applied to the outer surface of the metal foil at the same time.
