Abstract

1308134 Laminated panels IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 April 1970 [8 May 1969] 23462/69 Addition to 1227943 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C1 and E1] A laminate is made by bonding two panels in spaced relationship by means of a heat-sensitive adhesive comprising a blend of (i) 90-30 wt. per cent of the copolymer of ethylene, hydroxy or epoxy aliphatic acrylates or methacrylates and vinyl, acrylic or methacrylic esters which is used in Specification 1,227,943 with (ii) 10-70 wt. per cent of a copolymer of 90-20 wt. per cent ethylene and 10-80 wt. per cent vinyl ester, e.g. vinyl acetate, or alkyl acrylate or methacrylate. The panels may be of glass or polymethyl methacrylate (for double glazing), or of wood, plywood, aluminium, plasterboard, concrete, asbestos cement or polyvinyl chloride. The adhesive is preferably applied as a continuous peripheral seal between the panels, either as a coating or a gasket ; the gasket may be formed as a film on, or by extrusion or coating on to, a core or substrate. Spacing members can be included in the assembly. The space between the panels can contain air or liquid, and the adhesive composition may include waterimpermeable foils or coatings. In assembling glass panels, a silane adhesion promoter may be required. Bonding may be achieved by heating the adhesive at 110-200‹ C., e.g. using ovens, hot air or gas, radio frequency, electrical induction or resistance, before or after clamping the assembly.
