Abstract

1394883 Laminates DOW CHEMICAL CO 4 Aug 1972 [6 Aug 1971] 36605/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] Laminates, particularly of different materials having differing expansion coefficients, may be prepared using as adhesive a homogeneous, random terpolymer of 64 to 92 weight per cent ethylene, 4 to 16 weight per cent α,#-unsaturated C 3-8 carboxylic acid and 4 to 30 weight per cent of a vinyl ester of a C 1-7 non-polymerizable acid or a C 1-8 alkyl ester of an α,#-unsaturated C 3-8 carboxylic acid, the terpolymer having a Brookfield viscosity at 350‹ F. in the range 500 to 10,000. The acid may be acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, aconitic, maleic, citraconic or fumaric acid, or maleic or citraconic anhydride. Preferred esters are methyl, ethyl and isobutyl acrylates and vinyl acetate. The adhesives may be applied to the materials to be laminated in heat plastified form or in solution in hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon solvent, and specified materials are aluminium, copper, tin, steel, iron, wood, glass, paper, textiles and plastics such as polyolefins, polystyrene, ABS polymers, polyvinyl and polyvinylidene halides, polyamides polycarbonates, polyesters, epoxy resins and cellulosic polymers; and particularly glass/polyolefins, aluminium/aluminium, glass/glass, polyethylene/polyethylene, glass/plastics, aluminium/plastics, textile/textile and aluminium/ other metals. In Example 3 flame, acid or corona discharge treated polyethylene strips are laminated to metal oxide treated glass slides with copolymers of ethylene, acrylic acid and vinyl acetate or isobutyl acrylate. Improved bonding is obtained by quenching the laminate to room temperature.
