Abstract

1397210 Asymmetric bars THOMASSON SA 20 Aug 1973 [25 Sept 1972] 39256/73 Heading A6M Asymmetric bars, of the type in which the horizonital spacing of the hand-rails 2, 3 can be adjusted, includes a stand 4, a lower handrail 2 supported by two uprights 5 whose position with respect to the stand 4 is fixed, and an upper hand-rail 3 which is supported by two uprights 8 which may be inclined to vary the spacing of the hand-rails 2, 3, each of the uprights 8 of the upper hand-rail 3 being formed by two semi-uprights 9, 11, the lower one 9 of which is pivoted at its base 12 to the stand 4 and has its upper end located lower than the lower hand-rail 2, and the upper one 11 of which is arranged substantially vertically and is pivoted at its lower end to the upper end of the lower semi-upright 9 by a horizontal pin 13 arranged parallel to the hand-rails 2, 3, the lower end of the upper semi-upright 11 being integral with one end of a substantially horizontally arranged telescopic bar 14, the other end of which is pivoted by a horizontal pin 15 parallel to the hand-rails 2, 3 and connected to the corresponding upright 5 of the lower hand-rail 2. As described the uprights 5 consists of telescopic portions 6, 7 and the semi-uprights 11 consists of telescopic portions 11a, 11b which allow the heights of the hand-rails 2, 3 to be adjusted. In its simplest form the pivot 12 at the base of semi-upright 9 consists of a single pivot pin 18. As the semi-upright 9 is pivoted about pin 18 to alter the spacings of the hand-rails 2, 3 the telescopic bar 14 maintains the upper semi-upright 11 approximately vertical. When the spacing of the hand-rails 2, 3 has been adjusted the telecsopic bar 14 is locked and tensioning cables 19 are tightened. In a modification (Fig 4) the pivot 12 is of the double type and consists of a first member 22 pivoted to the stand 4 by pin 23 and a second member 24 which is pivoted to the member 22 by pin 25 and which is integral with the base of semi-upright 9. The distance L between the pins 23, 25 is half the range of adjustment of the spacing between the hand-rails 2, 3 and the lower semi-upright 9 is located half way between the pins 23, 25 when it is vertical. This arrangement reduces the variation in height of the hand-rail 3 as its spacing is adjusted.
