Abstract

1396977 Tensioning cables RUSTONBUCYRUS Ltd 29 Nov 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 55094/72 Heading B8B [Also in Division E1] A system for automatically and periodically taking up slack in a cable 25 comprises an hydraulic actuator 33 supplied from a source 39 of liquid under a predetermined pressure through a stop valve (40), Figs, 2, 3 (not shown), and arranged to urge a cable support 28 against the cable. The cable 25 operates the control mechanism of an excavator, causing arm 21 to reciprocate, and when the valve (40) is opened slack in the cable is taken up as liquid flows to the actuator through a check valve (49). To ensure that this only occurs when the crowd mechanism is static and the cable under minimum tension, the stop valve (40) is controlled by a limit switch 15 actuated by arm 11 when bucket 8 is raised and dumped; the valve may also be actuated by a switch (48) controlled by the operator.
