Abstract

1396875 Bis-(4-hydroxyaryl) substituted carboxylic acids and esters thereof IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Oct 1972 [27 July 1971] 35201/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises a compound of the formula wherein R is a tertiary alkyl or alkyl-cycloalkyl group, A is a hydrocarbon group and Z is H or a residue of a mono- or di-hydric alcohol, or a residue of a mono-, di- or trihydroxy benzene, and m is 1 or 2. They may be obtained by (1) reacting a compound of formula ZOOCACHO with a compound of formula in the presence of an acid catalyst; (2) when Z is not hydrogen, reacting a compound of formula HOOCACHO with a phenol of Formula II and a compound of formula Z(OH) m in which Z is not hydrogen, in the presence of an acid catalyst; (3) when Z is not hydrogen, esterifying a compound in which Z is hydrogen with a compound of formula Z(OH) m in which Z is not hydrogen, in the presence of an acid catalyst, and (4) when Z is not hydrogen, transesterifying a compound of formula wherein Z<SP>1</SP> is a residue of a mono- or dihydric alcohol or a residue of a mono-, di- or trihydroxy benzene, with a compound of formula Z(CH) m in which Z is not hydrogen and is different from Z<SP>1</SP>, in the presence of a basic catalyst. Examples are given for the preparation of the compounds. They are useful as antioxidants for organic materials.
