A process for the preparation of saturated alkanocarboxylic acid esters, in which alkenes of general formula R1-CH = CH-R2 are converted at a temperature of between 110º and 220ºC and at a pressure of not less than 50 atmospheres, where R1 is hydrogen or an unbranched aliphatic hydrocarbon group and R2 represents a hydrocarbon group, containing R1 and R2 together from 5 to 18 carbon atoms, by reaction with carbon monoxide and a primary or secondary monovalent alcohol, using a compound of cobalt as a catalyst in the presence of an amount of hydrogen of 0.01 to 0.125 moles per mole of carbon monoxide and of at least one organic base of the general formula: **(See formula)** where R3, R4 and R5 can all represent hydrogen or one or more of them represent an aliphatic alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a phenyl or benzyl group, the remaining symbols being hydrogen or two adjacent symbols can represent a ring benzene or a hydrogenated benzene ring together with the two carbon atoms of the pyridine ring to which they are attached, the remainder being hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
