Abstract

1396303 Metal seals BUNKER RAMO CORP 1 May 1972 [29 April 1971] 12272/71 Heading B3V [Also in Division C1] A metal article is provided with a glass insert by placing a jig adjacent an aperture in the article, standing on the jig one or more lengths of transparent glass tube, rod or filament, heating the assembly to melt the glass and form a pool in the aperture, cooling the assembly and removing the jig. The method may be used to provide a window in a pressure vessel or, as shown, in a spark plug; one or more metal tubes or rods may be sealed through the window. As shown, a nickel-iron electrode 15 is sealed in a mild steel body 10 by melting the glass tube 16. The coefficients of expansion of the glass and electrode are substantially the same and lower than that of the steel thus placing the seal under compression. A two-part jig 13, 14, of carbon is used of which the top may be concave to make the bottom of the seal convex.
